KS2 Science

This information brought to you by KeyStageTwo.com looks at the Key Stage Two Science stage of a child’s education (ages 7-11).

Every child is different, and has varying learning styles – but taking science education, one piece at a time with the help of additional learning can really help a child excel in their science studies.
During Key Stage 2 Science education, pupils will cover the four main areas of learning which are;

Scientific enquiry,
Life processes and living things,
Materials and their properties, and
Physical processes.

With additional science studies they can learn at their own pace, and at a time best suited to their needs -  this additional learning compliments the science topics they are learning in school and helps them achieve better results during class, whilst also making homework easier and more enjoyable – both with a view to achieving the highest grades possible in exams.

Children’s learning is best carried out with a systematic approach – Letting the child see a learning schedule showing what science topics they will be covering and when, can really help them understand the bigger picture.  Once they have grasped the schedule and timings they can learn in modules to further boost their subject understanding.
An overview/schedule would give the child an understanding of what to expect – beginning with a link to science and how it is used in our everyday lives.  I.e., from the moment they wake up, all day long and continuing during the night.  For example, their alarm clock, the medicine they take for a sore throat, the weather report they watch on television, their favourite games console, the bus they ride on, the fact that clean waters runs from their tap, and flicking a switch to make a dark room light!
The overview/schedule will also describe what science related topic’s the child will learn about, such as living things, humans, plants, animals, materials, rock, soil, liquids, gases and finishing off with physical processes such as the earth, moon and sun, electrical circuits, electrical conductors, friction, light and sound.
